Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo was elected the fifth President of the Democratic Republic of Congo in December 2018, in the country’s first peaceful transfer of power. Elected as a member of the National Assembly in 2011, Mr Tshisekedi was deprived of his parliamentary mandate in 2013 after refusing to take his seat in protest at electoral fraud. He became national president of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress in 2018. Mr Tshisekedi was elected first vice-president of the African Union for 2020, and is currently serving a one-year term as chair of the AU.
